About Tablespoons Bakery

Who we are

Tablespoons Bakery is a vocational culinary training program through the non-profit Next Move Program, that provides internship experiences and employment opportunities for young adults with developmental disabilities. Launched in 2017 with the support of the Virginia Department of Education and professional baker Britt Falabella, our baking program serves about 50 young adults annually and strives to combat the 70% unemployment rate for their group in the state of Virginia.

What we do

We empower students with diverse abilities to achieve their employment goals through professional training experiences in the culinary arts and entrepreneurship. Interns in our baking program learn critical work and independent living skills while assisting in all parts of the bakery business—from measuring ingredients in the kitchen to making change for customers. And the best part? They get to do it all while making friends and having fun.

Why we do it

We bake to make a difference. To teach our students that they are capable. To help them build confidence in themselves and others. To give them the opportunity to learn important skills that lead to independence. To show them that their differences are beautiful and that they have everything it takes to succeed. We bake to make a difference because we believe that everyone is able.

Britt played a huge role in the start of Tablespoons, making our program possible by donating recipes and kitchen space. Today, she serves as our baking consultant—developing new recipes, answering all of our baking questions, and volunteering with our students in the kitchen. When she’s not whipping up a sweet treat, Britt also enjoys volunteering with the Special Olympics.

Brianne lives south of the James with her husband and two cats. In her free time, she loves to bake treats for others, host gatherings, and volunteer in her community. She also enjoys getting out on her paddle board, hiking mountain trails, and traveling to new destinations.
